What is CBD Oil?

Cannabidiol or CBD oil is extracted from the cannabis indica or sativa plants. It’s becoming an increasingly popular product due to its health benefits. Pinnacle Hemp offers the low-down on “What is CBD oil”, including CBD oil facts, its effects, and the different types of CBD oil products.

What Is CBD Oil and What Effects Does It Produce?

Cannabis is comprised of a wide range of chemicals that lead to diverse effects. CBD is one of the several cannabinoids – compounds or chemicals that naturally occur in the cannabis plant. It differs from delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is the most active component of cannabis. Being psychoactive, THC produces a psychological effect and is responsible for the mind-altering high. On the other hand, CBD is not psychoactive despite being found naturally in the cannabis plant; so it does not provide the mind-numbing high or euphoric effect. On the contrary, it is known for its multitude of health benefits ranging from relief from chronic pain and insomnia and enhancing appetite to easing anxiety and inflammation and improving heart health and hypertension conditions.

Generally speaking CBD oil does not comprise THC, the compound causing intoxication; however a few products may contain trace amounts of it, depending on the regulations surrounding cannabis use in the state in which they are sold. Since CBD offers a plethora of health enhancing benefits without any psychoactive effects, it is being widely researched by scientists for it potential medical applications. But is CBD oil legal? Yes, it’s federally legal if it contains no more than 0.3 percent of THC.

TYPES OF CBD OIL

Now that we’ve understood what is CBD oil, it’s time to explore the different types of CBD oils and their distinction. CBD oils can be categorized according to their content of cannabinoids. As such, there are three primary types: Isolate CBD, full spectrum CBD, and broad spectrum CBD.

Isolate CBD

Isolate CBD contains only CBD. When the cannabinoids are extracted, isolate CBD is made by filtering out CBD and then “winterising” it to eliminate all other chemicals. Unlike the other types of CBD oil, it does not contain any of the other compounds such as, cannabinoids, terpenes, or healthy fatty acids found in the cannabis plant.

Full Spectrum CBD Oil

In stark contrast to isolate CBD, full spectrum CBD includes all cannabinoids of cannabis including THC and CBD of course. It also involves flavonoids, terpenes, chlorophyll, and fatty acids, which are naturally occurring compounds of the plant. An important point to note here is that full spectrum CBD oil does not contain a high amount of THC; so this product cannot produce the intoxicating effect or high.

This full or whole plant extract, as it’s called, includes the “full spectrum” of cannabinoids and chemical compounds of cannabis. Therefore it offers all of the health benefits associated with those compounds called the entourage effect.

Broad Spectrum CBD Oil

Broad spectrum CBD lies somewhere between isolate CBD and full spectrum CBD oils. It has all of the cannabinoids and compounds naturally occurring in the cannabis plant, except for THC. So, in essence, it offers a part of the entourage effect. The best part is that since it’s devoid of THC, broad spectrum CBD oil may not show up on a THC drug test and it can also be used in those states where THC intake is illegal.
