what's the difference between hemp oil and cbd oil

What’s the Difference Between Hemp Oil and CBD Oil?

If you’re wondering what is the difference between hemp seed oil and CBD oil, it can help to remember that hemp seed oil doesn’t contain any CBD at all. Rather than CBD oil and hemp oil being interchangeable words that refer to the same product class, they’re actually quite different — though one place that they are similar is that they both are free from the stuff that gets you high: THC.

Essentially, the difference between hemp oil and CBD oil comes down to how to where the oil comes from. Hemp oil is made from hemp seeds while CBD oil is made from the flower, leaves and stems of a hemp plant. If it’s from the seeds of a hemp plant, it’s hemp oil; if it’s from the flower and other organic material of a hemp plant, it’s CBD oil. While the distinction seems arbitrary, the resulting products are different in significant ways. And if you’re wanting CBD oil but you only have access to Hemp oil, it’s important to know that they’re not substitutes for one another.

What’s the Difference Between Hemp and Cannabis?

Both hemp oil and CBD oil are derived from the hemp plant, which is itself a variety of the cannabis plant. Also known as cannabis sativa, hemp plants contain no THC that can get you high while cannabis indica can have up to 30 percent THC by volume. By comparison, hemp plants commonly have less than 0.3 percent THC by volume.

Can You Get High From Hemp?

Whether you’re using hemp oil or CBD oil, you cannot get high from hemp. That’s because there are no psychoactive compounds inside such as THC that can give you that heady and spaced-out feeling. For those that use hemp oil or CBD oil to cook or to take sublingually under the tongue, that means no worry of an inadvertent high or any other side effects associated with THC and cannabis.

Can You Make CBD From Cannabis?

CBD can actually be extracted from both cannabis and hemp. Most brands and products elect to extract CBD from hemp because of the legality around hemp based CBD products, though you can certainly create a CBD product from a cannabis plant. However, in these instances you’ll likely have a THC- and CBD-based product as both are drawn out during the extraction process.

What Are the Benefits of CBD Oil?

While our understanding of CBD and its various applications is evolving with each passing day, CBD is widely used to treat a variety of symptoms and conditions such as pain, inflammation, anxiety, depression, insomnia and low energy, among others. It comes in oils, capsules, flower and topicals such as creams and salves, and that means there are many approaches to using CBD, which include smoking, eating, drinking or applying it directly to the body.

What Are the Benefits of Hemp Oil?

Unlike CBD, which is taken primarily for its medicinal qualities, hemp seed oil can be thought of as an alternative to your typical cooking oil. In fact, hemp oil is rich in omegas and other good fats, and it also has no trans fats and about half as much saturated fats as olive oil. That makes hemp oil good for the brain and the heart, in addition to boosting the immune system and helping with circulation.
